Quality Support Equals Positive Outcomes for Our Students
At North Rockhampton State High School, we firmly believe that student success is a collaborative effort between the student, school, and parents. We encourage parental involvement in their child's education and support open communication between staff and families. Our dedicated support team is available to assist students in achieving their academic and personal goals.
Guidance Officers: Christine McTaggart & Garrett McKenzie
Our guidance officers play a vital role in supporting students' emotional well-being, providing guidance on educational success, career pathways, and mental health. Mrs. McTaggart works with students in Years 7-9, while Mr. McKenzie supports those in Years 10-12. Additionally, they are involved in verifying students with special needs.
Community Education Counsellor: Jodie Martin
Our Community Education Counsellor (CEC) provides targeted support to Indigenous students, ensuring they thrive at high school through in-class assistance, organizing support programs, and promoting cultural celebrations.
School Nurse: Krystal South
The school nurse supports the health and well-being of students and staff at North Rockhampton State High School. She is available for individual appointments, delivers health-related information in classrooms, and promotes overall well-being within the school community.
Youth Support Coordinators: MJ Hamblin & Penny Hinchliffe
Our Youth Support Coordinators (YSCs) assist students in achieving success by supporting those at risk of disengagement. They collaborate with community partners and track students' progress beyond Year 12, helping them transition into the workforce or further education.
Social Worker: Rhianna Parter
The school social worker provides essential support to students, addressing their well-being needs and working closely with families to ensure they receive the necessary assistance.
GP Clinic – Kerinda Burton
Our school’s nurse practitioner is available every Tuesday, offering a comprehensive range of general practitioner services. Students can schedule appointments through Student Services.
Psychologist – Shani Granger
North Rockhampton State High School is fortunate to have Ms. Granger on staff. While much of her work involves supporting psychologists across the region, she also provides mental health support to students by appointment.
Year Level Coordinators:
Years 7 & 8: Jock Mann
Year 9: Malcolm Kenny
Year 10: Tim Hodgetts
Year 11 : Maddison Bygrave
Year 12: Helen Vesey
Year Level Coordinators assist students with social concerns and collaborate with families to develop strategies for success. Families can arrange an appointment with their child’s Year Level Coordinator through the school office.
Attendance – 90% or More
School attendance is crucial to academic success. Research shows that even minor absences can have a long-term impact on a student’s education. With multiple class transitions and break times each day, being 4-5 minutes late per session can accumulate to a loss of over one and a half years of learning throughout a student’s schooling. Parents play a pivotal role in ensuring regular attendance and engagement.
If you wish to meet with any member of our support team to discuss your child's progress and success at North Rockhampton State High School, please contact the school office to schedule an appointment.

The Senior Boys team has shown excellent form and well positioned to contest the finals. The Girls Basketball team also had a commendable season, although narrowly missed out on advancing to the Grand Final.
A sincere thank you to all staff members and volunteers who generously give their time to coach and manage these teams. Your dedication is greatly appreciated by all students involved.

I have been a teacher for over 25 years, 17 of those specialising in EALd (ESL) teaching at schools such as Lakes Creek State School, Glenmore State School, Crescent Lagoon and North Rockhampton State High School. I have also been the advisory visiting teacher for English as a second language at 'all' Rockhampton and Capricorn Coast Schools for 15 of those years, visiting most schools. I have a Bachelor of Education with Honours, Diploma in TESOL and Cert 4 in TESOL.
For many years my past students have asked me to tutor externally, however, I have not had the time. As I'm currently off work to care for my mother, I now have the opportunity to tutor EAL people from home, in Rockhampton. I'm available to tutor new arrivals, beginners, students needing academic support, or adults wanting to learn or improve their English.
If you have any parents or children who would like language classes, please feel free to have them contact me on t.hopkins@bigpond.com, 0438763307, or on my Facebook page Tracey's Tutoring.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers

This term, students across our Design and Technologies, Engineering, and Early Childhood Studies programs have engaged in a diverse range of inquiry-based learning experiences that combine creativity, critical thinking, and real-world application. Through these hands-on opportunities, students from Years 8 to 12 have developed practical skills, deepened their understanding of theoretical concepts, and explored cultural and industrial contexts relevant to their fields of study.
In Design and Technologies Food classes, students have demonstrated innovation and initiative in designing and preparing a variety of recipes. Year 8 students focused on utilizing readily available ingredients to create healthy meals such as fried rice, pasta salads, and mini quiches. Year 9 students explored cultural fusion by incorporating native and international flavours into their dishes, producing unique items including wattle seed muffins, sushi, and chicken tandoori pizzas. Meanwhile, Year 10 students investigated the global origins of rice and pasta, applying diverse culinary techniques to create meals such as sweet ricotta ravioli, nasi goreng, and adaptations of traditional pasta recipes. Each student compiled a comprehensive folio featuring detailed research, evaluations, and written reflections, highlighting the depth of their culinary investigations.
Within the Engineering program, students are acquiring valuable industry-aligned skills through structured, practical workshop activities. Year 12 students are currently undertaking projects focused on precision fitting and turning, producing items such as meat mallets and drill gauges using advanced machinery including the lathe, milling machine, and drill press. Year 11 students have been introduced to the principles of fabrication and manufacturing, developing foundational skills in welding, component assembly, and collaborative problem-solving. These experiences provide essential preparation for future pathways in engineering and related industries.
In Early Childhood Studies, Year 11 students have explored the importance of play in the learning and development of young children. Through weekly visits to Little Zebra, students have observed key early childhood theories in practice and contributed to the learning environment by designing and facilitating a range of play-based learning activities. The staff at Little Zebra have generously shared their expertise, offering invaluable support and professional insights throughout the term. We extend our sincere appreciation to the educators at Little Zebra for their ongoing commitment to our students’ growth and development.
These enriching experiences across subject areas not only foster academic achievement but also equip our students with the knowledge, confidence, and practical capabilities necessary to thrive in their chosen pathways.

This term has been a busy one for HPE with the running of the 65th swimming carnival (congratulations Berserker winning by the narrowest margins over Archer) and cross country coming up Friday 4th April at Kemp Beach. Shout out to DJ Star (Year 10 student Jayda Kolbe) for her awesome DJ music throughout the day.
Reminder consent forms for cross country are due by 28th March. Will Archer get their revenge? Or will Fitzroy or Keppel come out swinging (I should say running).
In year 7 HPE, they have finished their swimming lessons as part of their course in term 1. Was great to see a high level of participation, with swimming and aquatic skills being such a necessity in the environment we have in the Central Queensland region.
All the junior classes have their assessment in week 8 and 9, I encourage all parents/guardians to speak to their child about their progress with their class and we welcome you to contact the teachers should you have any queries.
Next term year 12 Recreation classes have their excursion over to Great Keppel Island on May 8, consent forms are due back no later the May 1. See your teacher for a consent form ASAP.
Also next term we will be welcoming CQ AFL development officer Mr Scott Smithwick to the school to teach our year 9 students some basic fundamentals of AFL. AFL has rich history at North Rockhampton State High and we thank CQ AFL for their community partnership with the school. Who knows, we may find another Zac Smith!!!! Please google this former student if you are unsure who he is, heard he is now selling some awesome coffee beans (Tallboy Coffee).
Please remember parents/guardians if your child is not able to participate in any of the practical classes, that a note is required from home to inform the teacher. We thank you in advance for co-operation around this.
Active kids are smart kids!!
