Suicide Prevention Day – Let’s Talk and Support Each Other
Suicide Prevention Day, is on September 10th and is a day to raise awareness about mental health and the importance of suicide prevention. Talking about mental health and suicide can be difficult, but it’s crucial to break the stigma and offer support to those who may be struggling.
In Australia, suicide is the leading cause of death for young people, and many individuals face mental health challenges that can lead to thoughts of self-harm or suicide. It is essential that we create a supportive environment where people feel safe to talk about their feelings and seek help.
Here’s some ways you can make a difference:
- Start a conversation: Asking a friend how they’re feeling can make a huge difference. Listen without judgment and let them know you care.
- Know the signs: If someone is feeling hopeless, withdrawing from activities, talking about death or suicide, or experiencing significant mood changes, these could be warning signs. Be alert and reach out to a trusted adult or school professional for support.
- Encourage help-seeking: If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, it’s important to seek help. There are many services available, including Lifeline (13 11 14) and Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800), where trained professionals can offer support.
Let’s break the silence around suicide and mental health, and make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
